Protect yourself & your family from getting the flu this winter!

        ·         Cover your mouth and nose with a kleenex when you cough or sneeze & throw it in the garbage after you use it.
·         Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol based hand sanitizer.
·         Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth- germs easily spread this way.
·         Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
·         If you are sick with flu-like illness, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities.
·         Limit contact with others when sick to keep from infecting them.

Are you getting enough Vitamin D?

Vitamin D is best known for its role in bone health, as it helps the body absorb calcium. However, recent
studies suggest that older people with lower blood levels of vitamin D are more likely to lose their balance
and fall, possibly because of vitamin D’s role in promoting muscle function. Lower levels of vitamin D
have been associated with a greater risk of fractures, falls, breast and colorectal cancers, poor immunity
and cardiovascular and other diseases such as multiple sclerosis.

When vitamin D deficiency occurs, very little calcium is absorbed.  In adults, this can lead to osteoporosis, and in children, rickets.  Since vitamin D is found naturally in only a few foods like fatty fish and egg yolks, it is added to foods such as milk and margarine. Although vitamin D can be made by the body when the skin
is exposed to sunlight, vitamin D production is unlikely to occur from late October through early March, due to the decrease in sunlight in Canada during this season.  Therefore, if you do not have a diet rich in the above foods, or have limited sun exposure, you are at risk for becoming deficient in vitamin D.

The Recommended Dietary Allowance per day of vitamin D, as per Health Canada, assuming minimal sun exposure for all is:
Infants 0-12 months - 400IU
Children 1-8 years - 600IU
Children & Adults 9-70 years - 600IU
Adults >70 years - 800IU
Pregnancy & Lactation - 600IU

Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information on vitamin D and if a supplement may be right for you.

Start packing your car for winter trips this year!

The winter season has begun.  Help yourself and your family by preparing for it!  Pack your car with a few essentials keep you safe and ready for whatever conditions happen on your trip.

·                     Keep your gas tank at least half full at all times
·                     Invest in a car charger for your cell phone and make sure to bring your cell with you when traveling
·                     Store an ice scraper/brush and shovel in your vehicle
·                     If you don't already have a first aid kit, buy one and winterize it by adding extras like flashlights, batteries, matches/lighters, instant hand/foot warmer packs, bottled water, non-perishable snacks (beef jerky, eatmore bars, dried fruit and nuts, granola bars)
·                     Keep a supply of warm clothing, extra winter gear (mittens, scarves, ski-pants, jackets, toques, boots), and warm blankets or a sleeping bag in your vehicle
·                     Clear off your windshield, hood, roof, and head and taillights before each trip to maximize visibility for yourself and others

Ecoaquariums

If the kids are bugging you for a puppy or kitten this year for christmas and you don't want the extra work & hassle that comes with a furry pet, we have a perfect solution. Check out our Egoaquariums that come complete with 2 dwarf african frogs, live gravel food and bamboo plants. They only have to be fed four pellets twice a week and the spring water has to be changed ever 3 months. It can't be any easier than that. These ecoaquariums are also a great gift for that hard to buy person on your list. They make a nice addition to your home or office.

Did you know?!?!?

DID YOU KNOW....that the "stomach flu" is not actually a flu??? a flu is characterized as "influenza"....stomach bugs are gastroenteritis and therefore the seasonal flu shot DOES NOT protect you against stomach bugs!!! also, these stomach ailments are contagious for 48HOURS AFTER the last symptom disappears!!! That's why it hits family members every 24 - 48 hrs.....so please keep yourself or your kids home that extra day to prevent the spread. Sending them back to school or daycare only spreads it further!
