Limit the loot without spoiling the fun- How to keep your child from eating too much Halloween candy

·                    Use small Halloween bags/containers- Don't let your child trick-or-treat with a pillowcase, instead send them out with a smaller bag, and they'll collect less candy.
·                    Dole it out slowly- Let your child pick out which treat(s) they want and limit them to how many they are allowed to pick.
·                    Eat, then treat- Establish a rule that if they want to eat a piece of candy, kids must have a nutritious snack or meal first. This encourages them to eat more healthy foods and leave less room in their bellies for the junk.
·                    Offset  candy with exercise- Encourage, or require, kids to add extra physical activity when they eat candy--anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes, depending on their age, size, and fitness level.

Simple tips to keep Halloween night a safe night for all!

1. Children under the age of nine should be accompanied by an adult or responsible older child since they lack the developmental skills to cross the street on their own.
2. Teach your child to stop at the curb, look right and left, and to listen for oncoming traffic.
3. Teach  your child to cross at crosswalks, street corners or intersections. Many injuries occur when children run out between parked cars.
4. Select costumes with bright colours to increase your child's visibility and choose face paint instead of masks. Masks can make it hard for your child to see properly and therefore make it difficult to check for oncoming traffic before crossing a road.
5. Children should trick or treat in one well-known area and not wander into unknown neighborhoods.
6. All candy should be inspected by an adult to make sure that no one has tampered with it. If it looks suspicious, the police should be contacted.
