DID YOU KNOW that….
è Canadians born in the 1990’s have 2 to 3 times higher lifetime of getting skin cancer vs those born in the 1960’s. Those born in 1990: 1 in 6 lifetime risk of having cancer; those born in the 1960’s have a 1 in 20 lifetime risk.
è Melanoma is now the 7th most frequent cancer in Canada , affecting 5,300 people in 2010 and causing 920 deaths.
è Excessive ultraviolet (UV) exposure from the sun & tanning beds plays a leading role in the development of melanoma and IS the MOST PREVENTABLE CAUSE of this disease.
è Getting a “base tan” for a winter holiday is a MYTH!! There is NO scientific evidence this protects from burning in the sun.
Protect Yourself by:
è Avoiding exposure to the sun between 10 a.m and 4 p.m
è Covering up- wear tightly woven clothing that covers your arms and legs, and a hat (preferably wide-brimmed).
è Using sunscreen frequently and generously- Use a broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB) sunscreen with an SPF 30 OR greater, as recommended by the Canadian Dermatology Association.

è Wearing sunglasses when outdoors- look for a manufacturer’s label that states the sunglasses block 99 or 100 % of all UV light. Choose sunglasses that fit close to your face.
