Packing a Healthy School Lunch

To create nutrient rich lunches, try to include the following in your child’s lunch to give them the energy they need for a day of learning and playing at school:

·        Whole Grains- Use whole-grain bread, pita or tortillas and be sure to pack in a container that keeps sandwichs/wraps from being squished.

·        Fruits and vegetables- Choose fresh, dried, or canned fruits.  Cut veggies into bite-sized pieces to make them easier to eat.  Send yogurt for a fruit dip to provide your child with protein and calcium.

·        Protein- Use lean lunch meats and low-fat cheese in sandwiches.  Since peanut butter is not permitted in most schools due to peanut allergies, explore other options such as almond or hazelnut butter.  In addition to lean lunch meat, beans, nuts, cheese and tofu are great protein sources for growing children.
·        Calcium- Send milk in a thermos or enroll your child in a milk program at school, if available. Yogurt is also a good source of calcium and is available in many different flavors.  If your child has an allergy/intolerance to milk, calcium fortified juices, soy milk, and almond milk are good alternatives.

Growing Pains

Has your child ever complained of leg pain waking them from their sleep?  They may be experiencing “growing pains.”  It is unknown what causes them, but it may be linked to a lowered pain threshold.  Growing pains usually affect both legs and occur at night.  Some things to help your child through this are:

·        Leg massages
·        Heating pads
·        Warm baths before bedtime
  • Pain relievers such as Advil or Tylenol (AVOID aspirin due to risk of Reye’s syndrome-a rare but serious health condition linked to giving aspirin to children).

Prevention of Head Lice

Head lice are easily spread amongst children in child care and school settings.  It is important to note that if your child gets lice, it has no correlation with your hygiene habits or those of your children.  Talk with your children about not sharing personal items such as:
·        Hats
·        Scarves
·        Coats
·        Combs & brushes
·        Hair ties, clips, etc
·        Headphones
·        Sunglasses

If your child does get head lice it is easily treated with over-the-counter shampoos such as Nix, Resultz, and R &C.  For more information on head lice treatments, please ask your Sereda’s Pharmacy pharmacist.

Stacey's Favourite Things!

Here at Sereda’s we have a wide variety of products that would appeal to anyone & everyone. I decided to talk to the boss, Stacey, herself and see what some of her favorite products are… these must be awesome!

Every morning when she comes to work she grabs a London Fog from the coffee shop. This hot drink consists of steamed milk, Earl Grey Tea, and Vanilla flavor! Mmm… Sounds DELICIOUS! Come in and warm up with a London Fog on a cold day!

Now, Stacey occasionally has a bit of sweet tooth. To satisfy this, she usually munches on Bottle Caps- a sweet lil bite size candy that tastes like soda pop! Check out our confectionary section and pick up some bottle caps!

Stacey’s kids have great tastes in toys. We have a great selection here at the store. One perfect toy for her little girl is our Baby Stella dolls from Manhattan Toys. These dolls are soft, durable, and cute. They also come with a magnetic pacifier. For her son she says “He likes everything”. This is true; he can always find something he likes in the toy section. Check out our famous toy lines, Melissa & Doug, Alex toys, and Manhattan Toys.

The Gift shop & Cappuccino Bar is a spectacular aspect of our store! We are constantly getting new giftware. Stacey likes nearly everything in the gift shop but her favorite thing right now is our Napa Fire Pots. These make an excellent accent piece for indoor or outdoor use. Come on in and check out the one’s we have on display.

We have so many great products here at the pharmacy! These are just some of Stacey’s favorites. You have to come down and check out our great selection!
